The music that is played at a wedding reception makes or breaks the party. Having great announcements, intros and flow of activities great until the reception dance floor is empty or 2 people are out there the whole night. Reading the crowd at a wedding and having the right flow of music can be a difficult task depending upon the type of crowd, the ages of the guests and how outgoing the guests are.
For example; analyze the music that the bride and groom want for their special dances. If their requesting a more modern song for their first dance such as Jason Mraz Colbie Caillat Lucky then chances are their not going to be heavy on the 60s and 70s. If the cake cutting song is Dean Martin that's amore, than going with the 50s, 60s, 70s & 80s might be a better mixture. Usually a good way of keeping the crowd happy is to play a little of the current music and the 70s, 80s, 90s too. Some excellent choices for the mixed crowd are; Taio Cruz Dynamite, Usher DJ got us following in love, Black Eyed Peas I gotta feeling, Kool & the Gang Celebration, Sister Sledge We are family, Isley Brothers Shout and Commodores Brick house and many more. But those are great for mixed age groups. Now the reason why I am stating the obvious to most DJs and party planners is because, believe it or not, there are DJs are those people who put together music lists that just don't work for the crowd. Make sure when catering your music mix to the crowd at a reception that you play reception friendly style music. If you have guests in their 40s and 50s playing Lil Jon Shots may not go over so well unless the drinks are flowing and that crowd specifically asked for booty shaking music.
Don't play certain songs unless requested to do so by the bride and groom. If the crowd is a younger crowd and wants some fun current songs that also incorporate line dancing in it, the Cupid Shuffle and Pitbull Shake Senora are great crowd pleasers but don't get into the "cheesy" style songs that are sometimes a no-no. The chicken dance, cha cha slide, YMCA, etc are some top do not play songs for reception DJs. Some other good line forming songs that can work are Gloria Estefan Conga and Quad City DJs C'mon ride the train. Those can go over well with crowds of 30s to 50s. Some of the crowds in their 20s, 30s and even 40s enjoy some old school hip hop such as Salt & Pepa Push it, Vanilla Ice Ice Ice baby and Tag Team Whomp there it is. But having a wedding anniversary type of party may include the older generations from the 50s and 60s so make sure you don't go to far into the current music as you may have more spectators than dancers.
